How do I use the chat functionality?

You can chat with other members that are logged into VKSpotter.

When new or edited chat messages are received, they will be highlighted for 10 seconds

Number of chat rows to display

By default, 20 messages will be displayed in the chat area. You can use the “Rows” dropdown to select how many rows are displayed.

You can select:

  • 10
  • 20
  • 30
  • 40
  • 50
  • 75
  • 100

Your selection will be remembered until you choose a different value.

NOTE: It doesn't really matter what value you select. It will not effect the download speed of new messages. The amount of rows selected are only downloaded once when selected, and the chat will then only download new and edited messages every 30 seconds.

Sound Notification

If the sound notification checkbox is selected you will hear an audio notification every time a message is targeted at you.

You can turn off the notification sound by deselecting the checkbox.

NOTE: The notification sound is played for new messages and edited messages targeted at your callsign.

Sending a chat message

Select the chat band that you would like to use.

  • None (Off)
  • HF
  • 10m
  • 8m and 4m
  • 6m
  • 2m and 70cm
  • 23cm and above

Type a message in the message field.

Messages can be up to 150 characters long. You can see how many characters you have used by looking at the character count below the send button. Click the send button.

Target a message to a specific user

You can target a user of any message by including their callsign in the message. You can target as many users as you like in a single message.

If you target a user in a message, they will hear an audio notification (if their notification sound checkbox is selected) and the message will be highlighted when they receive the message.

You can target a user by clicking on their callsign badge, which will insert their callsign at the beginning of the message, or just type their callsign anywhere in the message.

NOTE: When you target a user, the message is still seen by everyone on the chat, but it is highlighted with a different colour and an audio notification is sounded for the targeted user.

Editing a chat message

If you need to edit your chat message, an edit button appears on the right side of the message for a maximum of 10 minutes. After this time the edit button will disappear.

Click the edit button and a dialog box will appear. Here you can edit your message and then click the “Update Chat Message” button to submit it.

When you edit a message, a label titled “Edited” is placed top right of the message.

How do I block a users messages

COMING SOON!

You can block individual users messages by right clicking a users badge and selecting “Block [callsign]'s chat messages”.

If the user is logged in and on the same chat band as you, their callsign badge will be greyed out.

How do I unblock a users messages?

If they are logged in and on the same chat band as yourself, you can right click their callsign badge and select “Unblock [callsign]'s chat messages”.

If they are not logged in, go to your settings page (click your callsign top right and select “Settings”), scroll down and see the list of blocked callsigns under the “Blocked Chat Users” heading.

Click the “Unblock” button next to their call and the users messages will now be visible in the chat.
